Shared vehicles
Another common fixture in cohousing. you should start tracking your car use metrics.
Something like
Month
Day of the week
No. of hours not parked in front of your house
And
Number of trips
Ex: December
Saturday
3 + 4 hours = 7 hours in total
2 trips
in other words ,
" During ice skating season I leave around 10 am , drop my kid off, run errands all day Saturday and finally rest at 7 pm. I come back home to eat lunch and unwind 1 pm - 3 pm "
Once you map it out you can more easily identify wants vs needs .
Most people don't NEED your car to go grocery shopping 10 blocks away from your place. It's probably just nice to not think about the time it takes to grocery shop. You don't need to pick up food from a restaurant 4 blocks away in a car.
When it comes to bikes they can be a major car trip saver as well . If you're physically fit enough, you can do most trips within a 1 mile radius on bike. Up to 5 miles on ebike ( being conservative because ebikes have a ton of range tbh )
If you need to carry Alot you can do cargo e bikes. Which one depends on your needs. Also there's no shame in getting electric cargo trikes either. They get the job done and can be easier to balance when loaded .
