Sharing food
In my experience, living with someone and sharing everything is impossible. Diets vary, moods vary, and the cost savings will be offset by frustration over not having a good you want when you want it . Just assume you won't be able to share stuff in the beginning and keep things separate.
Over time you might find out you use some of the same food items as the other person and you can start introducing the idea of taking turns buying a bigger size of the item.
The rule I have in my head is to go off of what the pickiest eater/ chef eats and see if other people who aren't so picky are willing to get them sae thing.
Ex : If someone is a Fuji apple purist but someone just wants to eat more fruit ; the fruit wanter should bring up possibly buying a bigger supply of Fuji apples to share to the purist
Some items I've found to be pretty universal
1. Milk
As long as you get lactose free milk , which costs more but lasts so much longer , you can buy a bunch of cartons and save that weekly trip to a convenience store
2. Eggs
Not everybody eats eggs all the time but the ones that do usually can deal with the standard large Grade A eggs
3. Filtered Water
Now there is a potential contention point about refilling the pitcher in a timely fashion but if you can find the time it does save space to share a big pitcher
4. Ketchup , mayonnaise , soy sauce, maple syrup
With these condiments, people can usually agree on using the same thing as long as it's high quality. Defer to the person who wants the highest quality and it'll usually be fine.
As it relates to cohousing, you can possibly have a common fridge / pantry stocked with certain items if you find some agreement. You should always keep track of inventory so you're not wasting food or always running low. And for theget common meals you can have a space dedicated to food items for them . Always keep track of what's used and what people are requesting over time. It'll vary season by season.
Until next time
